Finding The Right Cutting Board

By Jason Hall

When you are choosing a cutting board, there are many things to consider. You may be concerned about cost. You may worry about how to clean your cutting board properly. You may wonder which cutting board will last longest. Here are a few things you should know before deciding which board is for you.

A glass board may be beautiful, but it is more than that. It makes for a great heat resistant cover for your counter top. It lasts seemingly forever, and is also easy to clean and disinfect. However, the noise that you make when you are cutting on a glass board is enough to drive anyone crazy and glass is very hard on your knives. Unless you have an excellent knife grinding service in your area, consider another kind of board for your every day use.

For easy cleaning, durability and variety, it is hard to beat plastic boards. They come in a rainbow of colors. They come in all sizes. They can be very hard or they can be very flexible. They are easy to clean, making it easier for you to prevent the spread of bad bacteria.

The wooden board is considered to be the classic. It looks great, and can last a long time. However, it can be hard to keep clean and to care for. While bamboo boards are gaining in popularity, they are more expensive than many hardwood cutting boards.

Whatever board you choose, it is important to know how to keep your kitchen food safe. For best results, have several boards which are color coded for each separate kind of food: one for fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables, another for poultry, fish and meat, and one for dairy or cooked foods. This will prevent cross contamination of your foods, which will ensure your health.

Sanitizing can be done in a number of different ways. If your cutting board is small enough and made of plastic or glass, you can sanitize it in the dishwasher. If you have a larger board, you can soak it for half an hour in a bleach water solution and then rinse with clear water. Or you can spray that same bleach water solution onto the board. When the solution has sat on the board for a few minutes, rinse once more and then let it air dry.
